Marathons

After my DNF at Portland, I'm debating whether or not I'm done with marathons.  The training and time commitment are pretty intense and I've really only had one awesome race.  The rest have ended in illness or injury.  On the other hand, half-marathoning is also very satisfying, requires much less commitment and I've yet to have a bad half marathon.

I was thinking that I'd run Eugene this year but I'm probably behind enough that I can't easily get geared up for that.  There's always Portland in October.  I've at least attempted a marathon every year for the past four so not doing one this year might be a bit of a let down.  I've got lots of time left to decide but, for now, it's a huge question mark in my mind.

New Headlamp!

I recently acquired a new headlamp and, let me tell you, it is super awesome!!  I'm not sure how I managed running without it.  Actually, I am...  I carried a flashlight in one hand and Onya's leash in the other and it was a giant pain in my ass.  But, now, I just pop my headlamp on my noggin and I'm good to go!  It was especially handy this morning as C, Onya and I navigated trails in the pitch dark.  My headlamp is definitely my current most favorite running gear.

I've managed to stay on track with the 30 Day Ab Challenge.  And, I have to say, it IS getting easier.  I've added a towel to my yoga mat and my tailbone appreciates it.  I do feel like I'm getting stronger.  Now I just need to get in more miles!

Pain in the Butt and Heel

I've been having a couple of nagging pains.  The first one is in my heel and it started on Monday.  I went ahead and ran on it Tuesday and Wednesday.  When my run date for yesterday texted to cancel, I took it as a sign to give my heel a rest.  I'm pretty sure it's some form or level of plantar fasciitis.  It's not too bad but I definitely want to eliminate it as quickly as possible.  It hurts the most in the mornings, seems to 'warm up' during the course of the day and doesn't seem to hurt at all when I'm actually running.  It's a new 'injury' for me so I'm going to have to do some research to see what, if anything, I can do to alleviate it.

My second pain is, literally, in the butt.  As I've mentioned before on this blog, I'm currently doing a 30 Day Ab Challenge.  I quickly realized that I need to tuck my feet under something heavy.  The only piece of furniture in my house that is both close enough to the ground to properly hold my feet down and heavy enough to counter my beefy 133 pounds is an antique armoire.  As you can see in the picture below, that armoire is located in a room with marble flooring.  Marble is HARD.  I've found that I need to pad the tops of my feet with a towel and I have a yoga mat folded over and over to four times the normal thickness.  And that's still not doing the trick.  My tailbone is absolutely killing me.  Tonight, I think I'll try a folded up towel on top of the yoga mat and see if that provides any relief...  but I'm about to give up on this part of the challenge because it is just too painful.  Anyone have any suggestions to make sit-ups less painful?

Not great picture...  but you get the idea!

30 Days of Abs Update

I've been doing the 30 Days of Abs challenge for four days so far and I haven't missed one yet!  I know, it's only four days so it's not all that impressive.  But, still, sometimes you just need to celebrate the little achievements in life.  Only 26 days to go!!

I ended up skipping yet another long run on Saturday morning.  In my meager defense, it was my BFF's birthday party on Friday night so of course I needed to sleep in and recover on Saturday morning:).  I did get in a couple of runs last week and I have running dates this week for after work today, Wednesday morning and Thursday after work.  If I can make the Saturday long run, that'll be four runs this week which makes me feel very much back on track.

Also, I'm considering checking out a Pilates class tonight.  The class isn't until 6:35pm and it's offered on Mondays and Thursdays.  While that is awfully late for me to get in a workout, it does allow me time to get in a run after work and eat dinner before the class.  Then I can head to bed after a long, hot shower after class so it just might work for me.  The same place has a yoga class on Sundays at 4pm.  If I could make three classes a week, that would make the $50 monthly fee around $4 per class - which definitely seems reasonable to me.

WE 12/23/12, 12/30/12 and 1/6/13

The summary of these weeks is that I really, really suck.  First I had a cold.  Then I had a break-up.  Then I had an ear infection.  Blah, blah, blah.  I spent two straight weeks moping around my house in my pajamas.  And not running.  And eating too much.  It was sad.  Pathetic.  Depressing.

BUT...  I'm coming out of it!!  I ran my usual 3.5 mile route yesterday after work.  And today I saw a friend's facebook post with the 30 Days of Abs challenge so I'm starting that today too.  And I shared it with my co-workers who like to workout.

Many have asked about the next challenge. So here is it; Mean ABS Jan, Day 1 = Jan 3, just do it.

This is super hard to read so I made a version in google docs that's much easier to read so that I could print something up for my co-workers.  If you'd like it, let me know in the comments and I'll email it to you!

That's all for now...  but I'm hoping to start blogging on here at least three times a week.  Don't hold your breath.  Especially while doing crunches!!!

Oh no, another lazy week!!  I did manage to do my sit-ups three days but skipped the long run entirely because we were at a cabin on Mt. Hood with friends.  This time of year is so busy with fun activities that it is far too easy for me to slack off on my exercise and general good health (for instance, I've probably eaten 10 pounds of bacon during the last month!!).  Maybe I'll be able to post about how I've met all my goals one of these weeks soon...

I was supposed to run in the Canyon Rumbler Frozen Half Marathon on Saturday.  We drove over to Crooked River Ranch and spent the weekend at my parent's house.  I woke up too sick on Saturday to handle racing but Lee and K both had amazing races!!  It was the first annual event with 63 people signed up.  Lee took 12th place with a super fast 1:49 and K came in 38th with a very respectable 2:16.  The course was a tough out and back with a huge hill at in the first and twelfth mile.  I'm for sure going to be running this next year!!

I have a couple more weeks before Eugene training needs to start...  so I really need to think about getting back on track with my mileage:).  I do feel good about three days of getting in my sit-ups.  I'm aiming to make it four days this week!

WE 12/02/12

The first weekly update in FOREVAH:

Monday - 3 miles with D (Waterfront)
Tuesday - 3.5 miles with Onya (parks loop)
Wednesday - rest
Thursday - .5 miles with Onya (River Run)
Friday - rest
Saturday - 11 miles (Eastside)
Sunday - rest

My intention on Thursday was to do a track workout before work.  But I slept in instead.  My goal is to get back up to five runs a week by the end of December.  Having a new boyfriend has meant getting happy-fat so I need to turn the tide on that as soon as possible and more run days should really help.
